Lord’s Day Preview: February 1, 2015

Join us Sunday at Old Powhatan Baptist Church as we begin a new sermon series…

The Spirit Produces… is a sermon series exploring the beauty, depth, promise, and application of the Fruit of Spirit to EVERY believer’s life. Giftedness is incredibly important. but the fruit of abiding in Christ starts with and continues with producing fruit. Our prayer is that this sermon series will be transformativel for individuals… and incredibly formative for the present and future of OPBC.

“Christian spiritual formation is not simply fostering the experience of the Spirit but rather a radical formation, a shaping and molding of the believer into conformity with Christ through the Spirit” –Evan Howard

READ FOR YOURSELF:

Galatians 5:16-26  But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.  (17)  For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do.  (18)  But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.  (19)  Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality,  (20)  idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions,  (21)  envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.  (22)  But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,  (23)  gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.  (24)  And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.  (25)  If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit.  (26)  Let us not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another. WORSHIP THROUGH SINGING

We will also be singing a Communion hymn, “Jesus At Your Holy Table.” Here are the lyrics.

Jesus at Your holy table may our hearts united be;
Bind us with Your grace and presence
that redeem and set us free.
Crucify our pride and hatred;
light the path on which we walk
Teach us how to love each other
in the way that You have taught

Christ remind us of Your passion
Of Your precious life outpoured,
Of the love which none can fathom
and our victory evermore;
Bread of heaven wine of promise,
Feed us with Your holy Word,
Nourish us with Your strong presence
,
Risen Savior only Lord.

Lift your hearts and raise your voices
,
Celebrate this wondrous love
;
Join the chorus with all Christians
and with saints who live above
;
Silent lips now sing with gladness
,
Blinded eyes are filled with sight
;
Jesus’ love has pierced our darkness
,
brought us home to peace and light.

Prepare your hearts through prayer and come expecting God to move by His Spirit in your life and in the lives of others. Here is a great article on the Lord’s Supper by David Mathis.
