Psalm 34 I will bless the LORD pat all times; his praise shall continually be in my mouth. My soul qmakes its boast in the LORD; let the humble hear and r be glad. Oh, smagnify the LORD with me, and let us exalt his name together!
This Lord’s Day was a special one in the life of Old Powhatan Baptist Church and in my life as a pastor. It was a long day full of great, rewarding celebrations.
After a celebratory 8:30AM service and Bible Study, our congregation gathered at 11AM to celebrate God’s grace in the long line of godly men who have served faithfully at OPBC and to set apart (ordain) 3 men to serve our church as Deacons due to their qualifications under 1 Timothy 3:8-13.
Qualifications for Deacons
8 iDeacons likewise must be dignified, not double-tongued,3 jnot addicted to much wine, knot greedy for dishonest gain. 9 They must lhold the mystery of the faith with ma clear conscience. 10 And nlet them also be tested first; then let them serve as deacons if they prove themselves blameless. 11 oTheir wives likewise4 must be dignified, not slanderers, but sober-minded, pfaithful in all things. 12 Let deacons each be qthe husband of one wife, q managing their children and their own households well.13 For rthose who serve well as deacons gain a good standing for themselves and also great confidence in the faith that is in Christ Jesus.
We also honored Chuck Urbine and Al Cooper with the title of Deacon Emeritus for their combined more than 90 years of service to OPBC as Deacons.
Then, after a great meal in the evening, we gathered together to ordain Kenny Van Horn to the Gospel Ministry and to install him as an elder at OPBC. It was a beautiful celebration of God’s grace in Kenny’s life and in our church. One of the most special experiences was having several men return to OPBC who we have sent out over the last 10 years into ministry around Virginia. To have 3 Lead Pastors (Jeff Beard, Muddy Creek Baptist; Michael Howard Jr, Seaford Baptist; and Derrick Adams, Amelia Baptist) and Justin Beville, Associate Pastor of Kingsland Baptist, as well as our own Elders and Eddie Urbine (OPBC and SBC of Virginia) and Steve Bradshaw (Red Lane Baptist and SBC of Virginia) with us was a special treat.
There are not many moments and days like these… we should savor all that the Lord has done and all that He is continuing to do at OPBC! Enjoy video from both services as well as the pictures below.
